History of Famars

In 1967 Mario Abbiatico and Remo Salvinelli formed FAMARS, Fabbrica Armi Mario Abbiatico e Remo Salvinelli, in Gardone Val Trompia. Between 1967 and 1975 they built the first guns under the FAMARS name, specializing in smallbore guns complete with lavish engravings, a quality unique to FAMARS which carried through to today. Since 1976 our guns have been built with new serial numbers under Abbiatico & Salvinelli name with a concentration on hand-crafted guns made with the utmost quality.

FAMARS first developed the Castore, a unique self-cocking sidelock hammer gun with single trigger and automatic ejectors. After the Castore, comes the Quattrocanne, a brilliant four-barralled design made in .410 and 28 gauge with a single trigger that fires all barrels. Fine gun collectors in Italy and abroad marvelled at the new designs.

In 1976 Mario Abbiatico published Gran Incisione su Armi d’Oggi. This book was the first to detail the emerging engraving styles and engravers in Italy. In the late 70’s FAMARS developed the Jorema, a sleek best quality boss style sidelock over-under first made in 12 and .410 gauges and then also in 20 gauge. FAMARS patented pin less sidelocks giving the engravers an uninterrupted canvas to exhibit their work.

The Sovereign exemplifies FAMARS’s finest workmanship and design. The Excalibur, introduced in 1993, offers a special value. This gun is built on bold lines, a true competition gun. Great attention to deal to the Excaibur’s shooting and balance, which are practically perfect. Its ultra reliable single detachable trigger offers a beautiful “crisp pull,” with unparalleled smoothness. Today, the Excalibur is built with sporting in mind. The FAMARS Venus and Africa Express double rifles are built in calibres to suit any big game situation. This pair is unsurpassed and truly deserve their acclaimed worldwide reputation.

With perfect balance, handling, and hard-hitting attributes every detail is devoted to strength, reliable, and durability. Hunters also appreciate the perfectly timed ejectors and smooth trigger pulls. The FAMARS patented locks and action are engraved in the most exquisite styles or custom requested designed and are stocked in fully seasoned, finely figured selected walnut.

Those seeking perfection are constantly in a personal race to evolve from better to best. This evolution has been the standard cycle at FAMARS for the past 40 years. While raising the bar higher and higher FAMARS introduced two new innovative guns that surpass their bar of excellence. The world has never seem two shotguns that are so traditionally aesthetic and technologically precise. The Poseidon, an over and under, and Avantis, a side-by-side, have removable central sidelocks, that offer a blend of individual handcrafted form and mechanical excellence.

For the discerning sportsman reliability, form, and function are essential. FAMARS has great confidence in their locks and mechanisms and thereby offer a Lifetime Warranty on all mechanical parts.

Famars Today

FAMARS guns are so highly thought of because of their innovative designs, top quality materials, and first rate finish every step of the process. From the action and barrel makers to the stockers and finishers, our craftsmen strive for the perfection and individuality that makes each FAMARS unique. Our custom finishes, skill, and talent creates a special product. The best fit and finish can only be achieved by a perfect marriage between parts. FAMARS utilizes state-of-the-art computer-aided designs. The available CNC technology and spark erosion systems have perfected the machining of solid steel. This modern technology eliminates the inaccurate drudgery of removing unwanted metal with a file and chisel allowing the craftsmen to devote their skills and time to the finest fit and fitting. Reliability and exactness are the result of blending tradition with modern technology. This precision and reliability is what FAMARS is built upon.

With a wide range of models in production there is a FAMARS to fasten the pace of anyone’s heart beat. The Collector’s Masterpiece, the Rombo, is a four-barrelled, single triggered shotgun that allows the consecutive firing of the individual barrels; This is the pinnacle of the art of gun making.

The unique design of the Sovereign over and under, with its patented hinge, fore end iron, and smooth action floor, is able to open further and allows easy loading of the bottom barrel.
